Military - Ex-Prisoner of War License Plate

Any U.S. citizen who was a prisoner of war while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces or with any of its allies, or a surviving spouse, may apply.

Public Act 625 ILCS 5/3-506 allows transfer of plates to spouses of military service members. "Upon the death of a military service member who has been issued plates the surviving spouse of that service member may retain the plate so long as that spouse is a resident of Illinois and transfers the registration to his or her name within 180 days of the death of the service member".


*For any electric vehicle that would like a Ex-Prisoner of War license plate on their vehicle there will be an additional $100 surcharge to the registration.

  • Newly acquired vehicle/first-time issuance
    $155 - 1st set of plates ( $155 title fee + No registration fee)
    $306 - 2nd set of plates ($151 registration fee + $155 title fee)
  • Currently titled vehicle/first-time issuance
    $0 - 1st set of plates
    $151 - 2nd set of plates ($151 registration fee)
  • Current plates expire within 90 days
    $0 - 1st set of plates
    $151 - 2nd set of plates ($151 registration fee)
  • Current plates do not expire within 90 days
    $0 - 1st set of plates
    $0 - 2nd set of plates
  • Annual renewal
    $0 - 1st set of plates
    $151 - 2nd set of plates ($151 registration fee)

Switching from current random-number Ex-Prisoner of War plates to vanity and/or personalized Ex-Prisoner of War plates requires a $29 replacement fee. Registration fee may vary based on current registration.
