Driving Record Abstracts Driver Services
To obtain a copy of your driving record:
- The most efficient way to obtain your record is to purchase and print your driving record abstract using the Driving Record Abstract system. To use this service you must have a valid credit/debit card and a printer with the ability to print PDF documents. There will be a $12 charge plus a payment processor fee. These records are certified and are the same record you would obtain in the postal mail or in person at one of our service facilities; or
- Visit a Driver Services facility, complete an Abstract Request Form, pay the $12 fee and immediately receive your record. A payment processor fee of $1 will be assessed for credit/debit cards; or
- Complete and postal mail your Abstract Request Form to: Secretary of State, Driver Analysis Section, 2701 S. Dirksen Pkwy., Springfield, IL 62723. Please include full name, date of birth, sex, and Illinois driver's license number along with the $12 fee (payment by check or money order payable to the Secretary of State). Please allow 10 working days for processing.
- If you are out of state and do not have the ability to use our online service, a family member (parent/legal guardian, brother, sister, spouse, grandparent, child or grandchild) in Illinois may obtain a copy of your driving record at a Driver Services facility. The requestor must submit a notarized written permission of the person listed on the request form to obtain the driving record and pay the $12 fee.
If you are a parent or legal guardian of a minor (under age 18) whose driving record you are requesting, you must submit notarized written permission from the person listed on the request form to obtain the driving record.
If you are an immediate family member (parent/legal guardian, brother, sister, spouse, grandparent, child or grandchild) of an adult (age 18 or older) whose driving record you are requesting must submit notarized written permission from the person listed on the request form to obtain the driving record.
To purchase another person's driving record:
- Visit a Driver Services facility, complete an Abstract Request Form and pay the $12 fee(payment by check or money order payable to the Secretary of State). A payment processor fee of $1 will be assessed for credit/debit cards. The abstract will be mailed to you in 11 to 15 days working days; or
- Complete and postal mail an Abstract Request Form to: Secretary of State, Driver Analysis Section, 2701 S. Dirksen Pkwy., Springfield, IL 62723. Please include the full name of the individual, date of birth, sex, and Illinois driver's license number along with the $12 fee. Please allow 10 working days for processing.
Federal and state law prohibits the Secretary of State's office from disclosing any personal identifying information regarding the individual. You will not receive the person's address or any other personal information. Public information that can be released includes convictions, withdrawals and crash information. Before public information is released on the individual, notification is mailed to the individual providing the requestor's name and date of request. The individual is given 10 days notice of your request. Please allow for those 10 days and several days for mailing before receiving the driving record abstract.
The Secretary of State's office no longer issues clearance letters. If another state insists on written proof of your driving status in Illinois, you may request a certified copy of your driving record for the licensing authorities in that state.
