Origin of the name of the county
- Named after Williamson County in Tennessee through the influence of emigrants from that county. Williamson County, Tennessee, was named in honor of Hugh Williamson (1735–1819), a surgeon general of North Carolina troops in the American Revolutionary War, a North Carolina legislator, and member of the Continental Congress and United State Congress.
