Origin of the name of the county
- In all likelihood, named after Scott County in Kentucky through the influence of emigrants from that county. Scott County, Kentucky, was named for Charles Scott (1739–1813), an American Revolutionary War General and Governor of Kentucky (1808–1812). However, several Scott families were early settlers and a number were active in the affairs of the county in the early years. Scott Riggs, a member of one of the first Illinois General Assemblies, has been proposed as a source of the name, as have early settlers James Scott and John Scott.
