Entering Search Criteria

Enter text in any field to restrict the search to only those records which CONTAIN your text in that field. Searches are not case sensitive: you may use any combination of upper and lower case letters. The following types of searches may be conducted:

  • To locate a soldier, enter the name in the format: last name comma space first name space middle initial (for example, Smith, John D). The first name and middle initial may be omitted to accomplish a surname search.
  • To locate all soldiers in a particular unit, select the unit designation from the drop-down menu in the "Unit" field.
  • To locate all soldiers in a particular company, select the company's letter from the drop-down menu in the "Company" field and the unit designation from the drop-down menu in the "Unit" field. For example, to return a list of soldiers in Company A of the 10th Illinois Infantry, select A in the "Company" field and 10th Illinois Infantry in the "Company" field.
  • To search for all soldiers whose residence is given as a county, township or city, enter the name of the county, township or city in the "Residence" field.
